The Cleaning Lady - Season 2
The Cleaning Lady is a drama that centers on Thony De La Rosa, formerly a Cambodian-Filipino surgeon who is currently working and living in Las Vegas. Her reason for being in the US on an expired visa is her five-year-old son, Luca. Luca has a rare and life-threatening medical disorder for which he needs a cutting-edge bone marrow treatment, which is only available in Las Vegas. Until she gets treatment for her son, Thony makes a living not as a trained physician but as a cleaning service worker, alongside her sister-in-law, Fiona. After Thony accidentally witnesses a serious crime and is discovered hiding by the perpetrator, Arman Morales, she is offered a job both as a cleaner and a doctor within their criminal organization that could pay well enough to help her son and her family. Crossing into a moral gray zone, Thony begins living a double life, keeping secrets from her family, all the while cleaning up murder scenes and dodging the law.
In March 2020, Shannyn Sossamon, Adan Canto, Ginger Gonzaga, and Vincent Piazza were cast in main roles for the pilot.[34][35][36] However, Sossamon exited the project after the pilot's initial table read.[37] On April 6, 2020, Élodie Yung was cast to replace Sossamon in the lead role. It was announced that the ethnicity of Yung's character would be changed to match Yung's Cambodian background, but that aspects of Filipino culture would still be integrated.[38] On July 2, 2020, Fox extended the cast options for the pilot through September 30, with the previous option having expired on June 30.[39] Due to the pandemic, cast options were extended further on October 2, 2020.[40] Upon the series order announcement, it was publicized that Martha Millan had replaced Gonzaga in the series and that Piazza had dropped out. In addition, twins Sebastien and Valentino LaSalle were also cast in a shared starring role.[29] On July 13, 2021, Oliver Hudson was cast to replace Piazza.[41] On September 21, 2021, Shiva Negar and Jay Mohr joined the cast in recurring roles.[42] On December 14, 2021, Liza Weil and Eva De Dominici were cast in recurring capacities.[43][44] In August 2022, De Dominici was promoted to a series regular, while Chelsea Frei was cast in a recurring role and Naveen Andrews joined as a series regular for the second season.[2][4][3] On September 27, 2022, K.C. Collins joined the cast in a recurring role for the second season.[5]
The first season of The Cleaning Lady premiered on January 3, 2022, and concluded on March 14, 2022, on Fox.[48][49] The second season debuted on September 19, 2022, and finished on December 12, 2022.[50][51]
What went into the creative decision to have Fiona deported? With great sacrifice of course, Thony has previously managed getting herself and her family out of ICE issues throughout the two seasons.
Get ready for the guns, cash, and blood to flow again in Sin City as The Cleaning Lady returns with the upcoming second season. After first premiering in January 2022, the show quickly became one of the best-performing new series of the year. It's a testament to the show's creator Miranda Kwok, who made such an engaging story that has a South-Asian female lead and family at the center of it all. The series also highlights the socially relevant crisis of the treatment of undocumented immigrants and the struggle for healthcare, especially in the US.
The first season saw heaps of gripping action, tense drama, and even some palpable romance for Thony. To find out what the next season will have in store for our devoted mother, skilled doctor, and mob-adjacent worker, here's how you can watch the second season of The Cleaning Lady.
The second season will start airing on the Fox channel on Monday, September 19 at 9pm ET/PT. The 10-episode season will continue to air new episodes every Monday throughout Fall. The show will also make its episodes available to stream on the Fox Now app and Hulu the following day after airing.
Eva De Dominici who plays Arman's wife and business partner, Nadia, has been bumped up to series regular for the new season. Season 2 will also see some new additions to the cast including Naveen Andrews who will play Robert Kamdar, Nadia's ex who will try to get between her and Arman. Chelsea Frei also joins the show as Maya Campbell who shares a complicated history with Special Agent Miller.
Besides a few teasers and short promos for the new season, an official trailer dropped on September 10, 2022. The new footage picks up right where the first season ended with Thony realizing Luca had been taken by Marco. While trying to rescue her son, Thony also has some new ambitions in the pipeline to use Arman's shared money to build a medical clinic for other undocumented immigrants. The trailer also shows that Arman seems to eventually get out of prison sooner than later and reunites with Nadia and Thony individually. Naveen Andrews' role is revealed to come in between Arman and Nadia not just professionally but perhaps personally. Additionally, Agent Garrett Miller is still working with Thony and questioning whether she still needs to maintain an alliance with Arman.
Queen of the South (2016 - 2021): This USA Network series ran for five seasons and was an adaption of a Spanish telenovela titled La Reina del sur. The premise follows a woman named Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) who flees her home in Mexico to go to the US. Similar to The Cleaning Lady, Teresa takes matters into her own hands to survive and rise above her struggling conditions by building a drug empire. Along the way, she makes numerous enemies like the Vargas Cartel, balanced with some valuable allies such as James Valdez (Peter Gadiot). Yet, Teresa relies on her mathematical intelligence, resourcefulness, and pacifist leadership to reign as the titular Queen of her drug operation. Besides Teresa being a whip-smart, resilient protagonist like Thony, the brewing romance between her and James also matches the fiery chemistry of Thony and Arman. The series is available on Netflix.
In the season 2 finale, Luca De La Rosa's (Sebastien and Valentino LaSalle) health took a turn. Fiona took him to the hospital and Thony De La Rosa (Élodie Yung) again did whatever she had to in order to save her son. This time it included going with Arman Morales (Adan Canto) to steal back the drug Luca needs from season big bad Robert Kamdar's (Naveen Andrews) men and then, along with Fiona, taking hospital equipment to give her child the non-FDA approved drug. Luca got better, but his doctor reported Thony. Garrett Miller (Oliver Hudson) was able to pull the FBI informant card to get Thony out, but Fiona's release was not as easily achieved. After Garrett was killed in a shootout in an attempt to take down Robert, it became impossible and Fiona was deported.
EW spoke to The Cleaning Lady showrunners Miranda Kwok and Melissa Carter about killing Garrett, Thony getting more comfortable with criminality, Nadia's season-long journey of empowerment, and a potential third season.
MELISSA CARTER: We're trying to show that in crime you can't really control the outcome. When you step over a line, you may not be the one to get punished. We also wanted to catapult to a cliffhanger where in a season 3 we see what Thony is gonna have to do to get Fiona back. It was her fault ultimately. The criminal acts were to save Luca, we wanted to show a mother who would do anything to save her son, so borrowing a piece of machinery for a medical procedure was a small step for her. Thony is very good at talking her way out of things and we wanted to show this was something she couldn't talk her way out of. The repercussions reached far beyond her to someone that she loves so deeply.
Thony is better at being a criminal in season 2, but fights with Nadia and Arman about how far she'll go. At the end of season 2, where do you think Thony falls when it comes to her comfort with criminality?
CARTER: She's not committing crimes for her own financial benefit or greed or power. She's doing all of these things and she weighs all of them. We've hoping the audience sees that every decision she's weighing whether it's going to help protect her family or her son. What is interesting is you see a comfort leaving this season where last season violence would rock her so easily. Thony now takes things in stride more, so it's not that she's delving deeper into crime as a benefit, but becoming more acclimated to it.
CARTER: He's also fresh eyes into this world where Fiona has slowly gotten used to the crime and things Thony brings into their lives. JD comes in to ask what is going on and why their daughter is in this world of crime. He made her choose either Thony or their daughter, so that gave us great central conflict to our characters at the end that will still need to be dealt with in season 3.
CARTER: We love Oliver Hudson so much and we loved his character, but it started to feel like this season we wanted to show that crime does have consequences. No one is safe in this world. With Garrett we had really explored all of the different avenues that seemed realistic. He was a nemesis, then he helped Thony. They had that push and pull of where they were sort of friends. It was a cat-and-mouse game that we played for two seasons and Garrett makes that ultimate sacrifice to save Thony, which shows their growth. 041b061a72
